Costa Rica: Competition Intensifies in Pharmaceutical Sector

Walmart and CEFA trigger increased competition among drugstore chains by seeking to gain market share.

Corporación CEFA, owner of Fischel, Catedral and Farmatica, has announced that it is to open more stores in the rest of the year with one for Escazu in November and another for Limón in December.

Meanwhile, Aquileo Sánchez corporate communication director for Walmart did not mention how many new drugstores it plans to open but stated that its future supermarkets will each include a pharmacy. This corporation owns 158 stores in Costa Rica, spread across different brands.

Both chains combined currently have 86 pharmacy stores.

McDonald's Expands in Costa Rica

With the opening of a restaurant in Liberia, Guanacaste, the total number of stores for the chain comes to 33 in the country.

The store has capacity for 140 customers and it is located at the entrance of Liberia, near the Bramadero Hotel.

Elfinancierocr.com printed the statements Paola Badilla, marketing manager for McDonald's in Costa Rica: "The store will operate with 45 employees.

Epa Hardware Stores to Open New Shop in Costa Rica

The Venezuelan hardware store chain will invest $9.5 million in opening its fourth store in the country, located in Colima de Tibás.

According to information gathered by local newspaper El Financiero, "Ferreterías Epa" will build the store and a distribution center in a 34.088 square meter lot.
