Tender for Onion Drying Plant

With an investment of nearly a million dollars the Panamanian government will build a plant for drying onions in Nata, Panama.

The Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA in Spanish) is awaiting approval by the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) to initiate the bidding process and construction of the project, according to an article in PanamaAmerica.com.pa.

"According to onion producers, this projected has been eagerly anticipated for the past seven years, because of lack of storage for the product," informed the website.

Panama: New Onion Drying Plant

A $500.000 facility for curing and drying onions will be erected in the province of Coclé.

The plant will have capacity for up to one thousand daily onion quintals, improving commercialization of the vegetable.

Abad Barrios, president of the Natá Onion Cooperative, told newspaper Prensa.com: "We are filling the paperwork to purchase equipment for this plant, which will benefit over 200 farmers in Natá and the Azuero region".

Honduras: $1.2 million in Onion Drying Plant

Later this month construction will begin on a plant for drying and storing onions in the municipality of Güinope, El Paraíso.

The head of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG), Jacobo Regalado, also announced the planned construction of another plant in the department of Ocotepequeuna.

Honduras: Grain Drying Plant Inaugurated

With an investment of nearly a million dollars, the center will process 900 quintals per cycle and help Honduran producers become more competitive.

A new plant for drying basic grains was inaugurated in Salama, Olancho, and will benefit farmers in northern Honduras.

The plant can process 900 quintals per cycle. The cost is about $211,000. Investment in the five drying centers was $885,000.

Nicaragua Authorizes Onion and Potato Import

October 2011

The Ministry of Commerce has authorized the importation of 68 million pounds of onions and 58 million pounds of potatoes from Costa Rica and the Netherlands.

In order to supply local consumption for a month authorization has been given for 10 million pounds of onions from Costa Rica and 58,000 quintals of both potato and onion from the Netherlands , said Orlando Solorzano, Minister of Development, Industry and Trade (MIFIC in Spansih).
