16 Maquila Companies Emigrate from Honduras

In the past two years, 16 maquila companies have left the country, leaving 10,000 people out of work.

The president of the Honduran Maquila Association (AHM) Daniel Facussé, addressed the issue at the time of the announcement of the closure of Adidas and Nike’s manufacturing plants in Honduras and transfer of operations to Nicaragua.

"According to Facussé, Nicaragua and El Salvador are between 38 to 50 percent cheaper than Honduras", reported Proceso Digital.

The executive urged the government to create conditions for salaries and competitiveness in order to stop the migration of business to neighboring countries.

Faced with the loss of "competitive advantage" businessmen in the maquila industry are continuing to migrate their operations to Nicaragua.

Jesus Canahuate, director of the Honduran Maquila Association (AHM), said that since March a total of 21 companies in the textile and clothing industry have moved their operations to the neighbouring country.

The textile and apparel “maquila” will be located in the “Zip Calpules” field, in San Pedro Sula.

María de los Angeles Posso, from the Labor Ministry, explained the company has already started recruiting personnel.

“Daniel Facussé, president of the Honduran Maquila Association, expects textile exports to increase 5% in the first half of the year, resulting in more job creation”, reported Laprensa.hn.

Layoffs in the textile industry have been announced after projections of a 10% decline in its exports.

The industry is feeling the impact of the economic recession with a decline in orders from its main market, the U.S., said the president of the Honduran Maquila Association, Daniel Facussé.
