$2 Million for Biodiesel Plant in Panama

The Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) will build a biodiesel plant in Buena Vista, Colon Province.

The start of construction is scheduled for the first quarter of next year and has a projected production of about 10 thousand liters of biodiesel.

According to Prensa.com "the Empresa Brasileira de Pesquisa Agropecuaria, leader in agricultural research in Brazil, will provide MIDA technical assistance in implementing the plant."

With the plant´s construction the government would venture into the bio-fuel business.

With the goal of strengthening and promoting cooperation under the MesoAmerican Biofuel Project framework, which in turn is part of the Puebla to Panama Plan, Colombia's Agriculture and Rural Development Ministry last September signed a memorandum of understanding on technical cooperation in biofuels with El Salvador .

To carry out the project, the ministry delivered to the Colombian Corporation of Agricultural Research (Corpoica) two billion pesos to get the project started.

In the next five years, the State will install a biodiesel and an ethanol plant.

The project, directed by the Ministry of Agricultural Development (Mida), also includes activating an existing biodiesel plant.

"The existing machinery is worth $1 million, and was built by the state-owned Colombian Corporation of Agricultural Research", reported Prensa.com.

El Salvador can produce 40 thousand gallons of bio-diesel per day

Existing companies have the infrastructure to produce 40 thousand gallons, which is equal to 6% of the total national demand for fuel.

The production of bio-diesel in the country is a "win-win" project, the executive director of the Salvadoran Business Council for Sustainable Development, Luis López Lindo, said.
