$58 million in e-commerce in Guatemala

Internet sales have increased in Guatemala, although only 3.3% of the populations makes purchases online.

Guatemalan internet users spend $58 million shopping online in 2007, according to a study on e-commerce (B2C) in Latin America presented by VISA and carried out by América Economía Intelligence.
This increase is greatly due to economic growth, technological advances, an increase in the number of credit cards and changes in consumer habits.

In 2009, Guatemalans bought $8 million online, a 10% increase when compared to 2008.

The most sought after items were technological devices, e-books, magazines, books, CDs, DVDs and clothing.

Jorge Gómez, CEO of Trans Express told Prensalibre.com: “A couple of years ago, consumers used to make one or two online purchases each year. They now buy 10 to 15 times more”.

Internet Shopping Increases in El Salvador

The most sought for articles are technology items, among them computers, mobile phones and music players.

Jonathan Beltrán, customer service manager at Aerocasillas, remarked that purchases have increased 200% in the past three months.

Randall Chaverri, marketing manager at TransExpress, said in an Elsalvador.com article that "we currently have 35.000 customers in El Salvador who confidently make many internet transactions".

E-Commerce Regulation in Honduras

August 2009

An Electronic Commerce Law project, recently introduced to Congress, aims to guarantee Internet transactions.

Among other things, the law intends to regulate electronic document and signatures, signature certification companies, accreditation processes and documents needing certification for acts and contracts.

Regulating E-Commerce in Panama

June 2009

The law regulating electronic commerce in the country became effective with the recent publication in the Official Gazette.

Gisela Alvarez de Porras, Minister of Commerce, welcomed the joint work undertaken by the Government and private sector for the regulation of this law.
