Bad Roads Hinder Trade

The poor state of rural roads in Guatemala are harming producers, traders and passengers, meanwhile authorities are failing to address the problem.

“Last winter there were numerous landslides and erosions on routes used to transport goods and passengers in rural Guatemala. The affected routes are mainly in Granados, Cubulco, Rabinal, San Miguel and Purulhá Chicaj, " informed PrensaLibre.com.

"Armando Santos, a farmer in Tunkaj ,said that the losses are large, especially during the winter because they can not harvest crops of French green beans and peas that they export, as the trucks can not travel on the roads, and because they done have cooling systems, the products are ruined," reported PrensaLibre.com.

Guatemala: 440 Reconstruction Projects

The government has authorized 440 construction projects to be carried out to repair damage caused by last year’s natural disasters.

In response to tropical storm Agatha and the eruption of the Pacaya volcano, the Guatemalan national disaster center (Conred) has issued certificates backing the projects.

River Dredging in Guatemala has $13 Million Tender

The Road Maintenance Fund (Covial) will invest a total $23 million during 2009 in river dredging and mitigation.

Prensa Libre published: "For now, there are $13 million tendered for work on the Paz, Naranjo, Suchiate, Samalá, Siguacán, Pensivo and Polochic Motagua rivers and on the Chiquimulilla Channel.

$85 Million to Handle Emergencies in Guatemala

A fund will be created to improve disaster prevention and response, and to aid affected regions.

“The resources might only be used after a national emergency declaration or a in a state of Public Calamity. Both scenarios require a Presidential decree ratified by Congress”, reported Prensalibre.com.
