Central America Negotiates New Trade Deal

The region will hold the first round of negotiations with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).

The round of negotiations will take place between February 27th and March 1st.

Efta members are Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway, all countries outside the European Union.

Maria Luisa Flores, Vice Minister of Economy in Guatemala, said the main objective is to develop a market for that continent, after negotiating with the European Union, according to an article in PrensaLibre.com.

These four countries comprise the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) with which Central American countries have begun negotiations toward a free trade agreement (FTA)

In an event hosted by Panama, the Central American countries met with representatives of EFTA to exchange information on trade policy and other subjects as a first step toward an eventual free trade agreement.

The European Free Trade Association (EFTA), comprising of Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, will negotiate a free trade agreement with Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama.

The announcement was made by the Swiss Minister of Economics, who said that EFTA member states agreed on the need to deepen relations with Central American states.

The chief secretary of the MICI, Roberto Henriquez, explained that the first phase of negotiations involves the parties signing a Joint Declaration for Cooperation.
