Central America to Analyze FTA with Peru

The economy ministers of Central American will evaluate a possible Free Trade Agreement with Peru during the second half of 2010.

Héctor Dada Hirezi, Salvadoran Economy Minister, explained that Peru has expressed its interest in implementing a trade agreement with Central America.

“Salvadoran exports to Peru include: metal working, machinery, mechanical and electrical devices, paper products, cardboard and wood pulp, plastics and rubber”, reported Capitales.com.

With the aim of making progress toward a free trade agreement (FTA), the region's Ministers for Trade are meeting with their Peruvian counterpart in the Panamanian capital.

Present at the meeting will be Honduras' Héctor Escalante, Costa Rica's Fernando Ocampo and El Salvador's Carlos Moreno, representing their respective countries, which have all expressed an interest in participating in the FTA negotiations with Peru.

David Cristiani, Commerce vice minister, said the country's priorities are to finish pending negotiations.

The vice minister explained his country does not share Costa Rica's interest in negotiating an FTA with Peru in 2010.

"Information by Agence France-Presse revealed that Martín Pérez Monteverde, Peruvian Economy Minister, expressed to his Costa Rican homologous his country's interest in an Free Trade Agreement", reports Prensalibre.com.

Within negotiations framework on a possible FTA with Peru, the Industry Chamber of Costa Rica (ICRC) said the new trade agreements should be coupled with the strengthening of administration and promotion mechanisms in order to create potential opportunities for the industrial sector of Costa Rica.

Marco Meneses, President of the ICRC, stated the union´s position with respect to the round of FTA negotiations with the South American country, which are currently taking place in Panama, in a letter delivered to the Minister for Foreign Trade, Anabel Gonzalez, exhibited concern over the choice of partners enabling positive and mutually beneficial trading.

Rubén Morales, Economy Minister, affirmed that the country is interested in negotiating an agreement in 2010.

The ministry indicated that negotiations will be carried out after the ones scheduled for the association agreement between Central America and the European Union.
