Coffee Farmers Switch to Cocoa

Facing climate change, coffee growers from Nicaragua are slowly switching to cacao, specially in the north of the country.

Coffee growers from the Jinotega region, in the north-center of the country, noticed weather changes ten years ago, which resulted in hotter temperatures and heavier rains.

These variations took a toll on coffee production, which does not perform well under hot temperatures, and motivated growing cacao, which thrives in the heat.

According to a Reuters article, "The production of high-quality coffee beans has fallen by around a quarter in recent years".

The high cost of fertilizers, losses of 40 percent in the current harvest, and growing demand for grain has convinced many melon and watermelon growers in Costa Rica to switch to corn production.

It's expected that over the next two years at least 30 growers will make the change, which would involve about 2,000 hectares.
