Construction sparks a mining boom in Panama

Production by Panama's mines and quarries increased by 31 percent in the first quarter of this year, compared with the same period of 2007. The growth is being spurred by a construction boom and high international metal prices.

Demand for rock, sand, gravel and other materials has soared for projects that include the increase in the capacity of the Panama Canal, port expansions, the construction of a seafront boulevard, and residential developments.

Guatemala: Gold, silver mines to pay royalties of 4%

The agreement signed by 22 companies in the extractive industry will mean an increase in annual revenues from mining royalties of about $64 million.

Having previously paid 1% in royalties, gold and silver mining companies will pay the Guatemalan state a rate of 4%, said the President Otto Perez Molina.

In consultation with the population of a municipality in Guatemala where mining companies are setting up, 98.9% of residents registered on the electoral roll, said NO to mining activities.

The municipality of Nueva Santa Rosa, in southeastern Guatemala, asked the inhabitants to decide on the installation, development and operation of chemical metal mining projects in their territory, in a consultation process which will be extended to other municipalities of Santa Rosa.

Chinese Companies Interested in Metal Mining in Honduras

A group of Chinese businesses has stated its interest in extracting non-precious metals such as iron, lead and zinc.

Santos Gabino Carbajal, president of Honduran metal mining association Anamimh, explained that the Chinese delegation has held meetings with Honduran businesses that own mining concessions with a view to negotiating joint ventures.

Gravin Exported from Honduras to the United States

Conglomerates of Caribe S.A. will send its first shipment of 40,000 tons of gravin from Puerto Cortés to the United States.

Honduras's Office of the Secretary of Natural Resources and the Environment (Serna) offered, as a concession, the exploration of the Sapadril hill to the business conglomerates of Caribe S.A.
