Costa Rica Approves $52.4 Million for Highway

The Legislative approved a loan from the Andean Development Corporation (CAF) to build a road that will link the Caribbean with the country’s north.

The money will be administered by the Costa Rican Public Works Ministry, and will be used to develop the highway project, known as “Bajos de Chilamate – Vuelta Kooper”.

“Legislators must still vote on another infrastructure loan, a $375 million disbursement from an $850 million ‘umbrella’ loan by the Inter-American Development Bank”, reported Capitales.com.

Several infrastructure projects cannot be started until the Legislative Assembly approves a $850 million loan from the IDB and a $52 million one from CAF.

These projects are the highway to Heredia, the new road to San Carlos, the link between Bajos de Chilamate-Vuelta Kooper, concluding the northern Ring Road (Circunvalación) and enlarging the Florencio del Castillo Highway.

$60 Million for Costa Rica – Nicaragua Highway

The new stretch of highway will shorten the distance between the Atlantic ports of Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

The $60 million were loaned by the Andean Promotion Corporation (CAF) and they are intended for the "Atlantic Corridor Investment Program," which includes projects in Bajos of Chilamate and Vuelta Kooper (the stretch of highway between Limón and Nicaragua,) and a new bridge over the Sixaola River on the border with Panama.

The Ministry of Public Works tenders construction of a new road between Chilamate and the town of Vuelta de Kooper.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transportation (MOPT) will publish on Thursday the tender for the construction of a new highway between Bajos de Chilamate and Vuelta de Kooper, for a total of $ 52.45 million.

Sánchez Carvajal to Build Road in Costa Rica

Having submitted a bid of $50 million, the construction firm Sánchez Carvajal will build the road between Bajos de Chilamate and the town of Vuelta Kooper.

The construction of this road is considered strategic because it will shorten the distance between Bajos de Chilamate in Sarapiqui and Vuelta Kooper in San Carlos by 69%, from a distance of 87.32 km to 27.09 km and increase current average speeds of 50 km/h to 80km/h, taking a straighter and less mountainous route.
