Costa Rica: Banks Take Advantage of FTA with China

Two state banks are trying to take advantage of new trade relations between Costa Rica and China.

Banco de Costa Rica and Banco Nacional, two of the largest banking institutions in the country are reviewing their strategies to incorporate specific services to companies wishing to export to China.

The free trade agreement recently signed between China and Costa Rica will allow a number of Costa Rican products to enter the Chinese market duty free, which is expected to generate increased exports.

Banco de Costa Rica, for example, is one of the banks that provides financial services to those who carry out transactions with China, as indicated in an article in prensalibre.cr : "This institution has transacted around $100 million to China, in services such as letters of credit and transfers, among things. China Demands Better FTA Offer

Costa Rica is offering to free a 70% of all tariffs while China demands an offer similar to theirs, which is 95%.

The new offer from Costa Rica does not include the most sensitive products for China. Likewise, the proposal from the Asian country does not include the products of greatest interest to Costa Rica, like sugar, meats, and coffee. However, China does offer an opening of 94.5% of the tariff lines.
