The National Roads Authority (Conavi), received 11 bids for the expansion and rehabilitation of national road No. 1, North American highway, for the stretch Cañas-Liberia.
The offers range from $75 to $113 million for the upgrade option using asphalt which has a lifespan of 12 years, between $87 and $182 million for asphalt with a lifespan of 20 years and between $95 and $166 million for the option using concrete with a lifespan of 20 years.
The project complements the construction works on the road from Cañas to Liberia, which will be expanded to 4 lanes and will also include flyovers and 19 bridges, for which a separate tender exists.
Total investment for the whole project will be financed with $154 million for the first tract of a $300 million loan from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB).
Of the $154 million, $24 are for three overpasses and $16 for the 19 bridges on the 50.6 kilometer stretch.
Companies and consortia bidders included MECO, and Consorcio COPCISA and Grupo OROSI, Ghella S.P.A., ASTALDI, Consorcio Interamericana Norte PTHS, RAAS, Consorcio FCC - Interamericana Norte, Consorcio OAS - CEMEX, Consorcio Santa Fe - Cartellone, Constructora Hernán Solís, and Constructora Sánchez Carvajal.

The IADB has objected to the methodology used to award the works for the expansion of the Interamerican North highway to the Spanish consortium FCC.
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), which is funding the expansion works, objected to the methodology used to analyze the reasonableness of prices, saying it violates the loan agreement approved by Congress.

Conavi, the National Road Council. awarded 19 out of 22 road maintenance contracts.
15 were awarded to Constructora Hernán Solís ($142 million), three to Constructora Meco ($34 million) and one to Grupo Orosi ($13 million). Three contracts are still to be awarded.
“Conavi had initially decided to award all contracts ($237 million) to Hernán Solís, but has now decided to distribute them among more companies”, reported Nacion.com.

Six companies have submitted bids for building 9.62 km of the Northern Highway (CLN).
Called 4C, the stretch runs from Ciudad Dolores to the bridge in Nuevo Edén de San Juan, in Cabañas.
Laprensagrafica.com details the bids: “Equipos de Construcción, $13.31 million; Constructora Eterna, $11.84 million; Constructora Meco, $16.94 million; Astaldi, $12.03 million; FCC Construcción de Centroamérica, $15.53 million and TOPSAL Construcciones, $12.48 million”.
