Costa Rica Hotel Occupancy 70.6%

Tourist activity for the start of the season and end of year 2011 recorded a 70.6% average hotel occupancy according to the results of a survey conducted by the National Chamber of Tourism.

A press release from the National Chamber of Tourism (Canatur) reads:

Tourist activity for the start of the season and end of year 2011 recorded a 70.6% average hotel occupancy according to the results of the survey conducted by the National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR).

The study, conducted between 3rd and 9th January, monitored the demand of domestic and foreign tourists, as well as classification of the employer regarding the activity during the last two weeks of the year. The survey was conducted on 113 companies offering accommodation in the Planning Units of Guanacaste North, Guanacaste South, Monteverde, Puntarenas and Islands, Mid-Pacific, South Pacific, North Plains, North Caribbean, Southern Caribbean and the Central Valley.

Costa Rica: Hotel Occupancy Projected Above 70%

The tourism sector expects the start of high season to represent an increase in hotel occupancy.

According to a survey by the National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR), an average 74% occupancy rate is projected for the first two weeks of the season, ranging from the 15th to the 30th of December.

Roads closed, reservations canceled, passenger diverted to other regions, disruption of water, electricity and telephone services and damage to infrastructure.

Tourism was one of the most affected by the passage of Tropical Storm Tomas, leaving 6 out of 10 companies with some damage, according to a survey done by the National Chamber of Tourism (CANATUR) to 80 companies and tour operators in all tourist regions.

Confidence Index for Tourism in Costa Rica

The National Chamber of Tourism will prepare a quarterly Tourism Confidence Index, which will measure the performance and prospects of Costa Rica’s tourism sector.

The investigation stems from a periodic survey carried out by the Chamber’s Department of Research and Statistics.

Projections for the months of November and December are 53% and 57% respectively.

For the same period in 2009 numbers were 44% and 52.6% in November and December.

"Before the financial crisis, the average occupancy in November 2008 was 60.6% in November and 51.5% in December.
