Costa Rica: Moderate Expansion of Bank Branches in 2012

Only the Banco Popular plans to open ten new offices, the rest have plans from only one or two openings.

For the banks Nacional BCR, BCT, Lafise and others, it will be a year of moderate growth and their plans will be to participate in new developments or strategic communities.

"In 2011, many of these entities carried out expansion processes: Banco General opened offices in Rohrmoser, the banco Lafise in Multiplaza Escazú, San José, Alajuela and Liberia, the Banco Nacional in Bagaces and Puerto Viejo, and the BCR in Santa Ana, Alajuela, Ciudad Quesada, Perez Zeledon and Pococí.

Among the 16 banks active in the financial system, the number of branches exceeds 800", reports Nacion.com.

Costa Rican Banks now Offer Digital Cards

The Central Bank authorized several banks to offer these services: Popular, Nacional, de Costa Rica, BCT and BAC San José.

These cards enable users to participate in the wholesale dollar market, plus giving them a more secure way to perform banking transactions online.

“Digital cards are similar to credit or debit cards, they have an incorporated chip which stores a digital certificate, for users to authenticate at websites which implement this technology, in addition to digitally signing online operations”, explained journalist Patricia Leitón, in Nacion.com.

Banco Lafise Expands in Costa Rica

The banks started an expansion plan in the country by opening a new branch in the locality of Desamparados.

Gilberto Serrano, CEO at Banco Lafise, explained their plans to open 5 new branches in 2010, in addition to offering new products.

"Credit and debit cards, saving and checking accounts in colones, dollars and euros, investment certificates, mortgages and loans are just some of the services the bank offers", told Serrano to prensalibre.cr.

Costa Rican banks plan aggressive expansion this year

Driven by fierce competition, public and private banks are carrying out aggressive expansion plans this year.

Seven banks and the Mutual Group have announced that they will open at least 84 branch offices or agencies.
The most ambitious plans are those of the Banco de Costa Rica and Banco Popular, each of which is planning to end the year with 20 new branches.
