Costa Rican Coffee Wins Starbucks Award

This is the second year that the Candelilla Estate has won Starbucks' Black Apron Exclusives award; 2005 was the first time it won. In addition to the fine reputation that it obtains in the coffee world through this recognition, Starbucks gave the coffee processor a $15,000 prize.

Marvin Barquero wrote for Nacion.com: "La Candelilla was able to repeat this prestigious award due to its efforts in recent years to achieve sustainability in production. This is achieved through proper care plans with well-defined fertilization and sustainable management in the case of plantations, Hernández [Ricardo Hernández, general manager of La Candelilla] said."

The coffee processor sells Starbucks 50% of the 2,500 quintals it produces annually.

Coffee Growers See Starbucks Buying Slow

Coffee producers in both Costa Rica and Brazil were the first to show interest in joining the Starbucks coffee chain, as well as several companies in Colombia.

The awards recognize the efforts of persons and companies that have contributed to the development of commerce in Costa Rica through their efforts.

104 candidates were nominated in accordance with the criteria established by rules commission. The Fenacae (National Chamber of Commerce Federation of Business Association Award) was also given out at the same time. This is based on the their accomplishments during their membership.
