Nicaraguan ports are preparing to receive the first cruise ship tourists since October is traditionally the month in which cruises begin.
Despite the fact that fewer ships are expected this year, since they will be larger the number of people visiting is predicted to be similar to previous years.
An article in laprensa.com.ni comments that, "each tourist that arrives in the country on a cruise ship at the ports of San Juan del Sur or Corinto will spend on average $800 on tours, food and souvenirs".

Most of the visitors of the upcoming 2009/10 cruise ship seasons will visit from Canada, Europe and Taiwan.
"From each ship, around 700 tourists leave the vessel to visit nearby cities, and spend between $60 and $70 in crafts and food, according to estimates by the Nicaraguan Tourism Institute", reported local newspaper El Nuevo Diario.

During the next season that starts in October 15, 180 cruise ships will anchor in the Colon 2000 terminal.
For the current nine-month season (October-10 June-11) two cruise ships will depart from this terminal: the Ocean Dream, by Spanish company Pullmantur, and the Grandeur of the Seas, by Royal Caribbean.
