Customs Congress Begins in Panama

Experts from the World Customs Organization (WCO) will gather today, December 9, in Panama to discuss counterfeiting and piracy.

In the meeting, in which twelve countries of the region are participating, new routes identified for the transit of counterfeit goods and new methods used to counterfeit products will be publicised.

An expert from the WCO, Christophe Zimmermann, said, "This initiative will demonstrate the effectiveness of risk analysis of information provided by Customs to prevent the crime of piracy.

Representatives from Costa Rica, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Colombia, Argentina, Chile and Panama will take part in this event", reported Prensa.com.

Improved customs traffic sought in El Salvador

The level of customs risk for exporting companies will be evaluated jointly by the private sector and the authorities.

The evaluation will take place in order to speed up the processing of merchandize and to improve global fee trade indicators.

Under the Business Alliance for Secure Trading project, promoted by the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of El Salvador (CCIES), the private sector is seeking to minimize the risk that exporters face from customs processes, providing them with a certificate which to date is not approved by the government sector.

Operators feel that the system is "a wonder" and note that "customs offices in the interior no longer have long lines or people offering to streamline procedures informally (known as “gavilanes” in Spanish).

The IDB loan will help improve control, security and custom services at the Honduran port terminal.

Puerto Cortes handles 81% of freight and 76% of vessels entering and leaving Honduras and is the main port in Central America.

This project is the first of its kind in Latin America and the Caribbean and aims at improving the safety and fiscal control in order to facilitate and accelerate verification of legitimate trade.

New Customs System in Panama

September 2011

From October 1st a new Customs Management System (SIGA in Spanish) comes into effect.

The new system will allow better control of goods coming in and out of Panama, as the SIGA system will help the customs department keep a more accurately watch on the details of shipments.
