Dairy Industry Foresees Growth in 2012

Milk production in Costa Rica grew by 1.5% in 2011 compared to the figures from 2010. Dos Pinos, the market leader, expects to process 5% more in shipments of milk in 2012.

In 2012, the nation's milk production for both domestic consumption and for export, was about 967 million liters, an increase of 1.5% compared to 2010, estimated the National Milk Producers association (Proleche).

"Of this total, half or nearly half, was industrialized by Cooperativa Dos Pinos. Its general manager, Jorge Pattoni, explained that the cooperative received and processed 414 million liters of milk at a rate of 1.13 million liters per day on average. The organization expects growth for 2012 of 5% on the amount of milk received. It has 1432 associated producers", reported Financierocr.com.

"Costa Rica exported nearly 20% of its dairy production in 2010, with a value that the Executive Secretariat for Agricultural Sector Planning (SEPs) estimates at $74 million compared to $25 million reported in 2008", published the website.

$5 Million for Milk Processing Plant

Costa Rican Cooperative Dos Pinos and Panamanian Cooleche, will install a new plant in the Chiriquí Province, Panama.

The new plant will process quality milk at very high temperatures, allowing its conservation for a period of six to eight months.

Coopeleche president, Belisario Contreras, indicated that they are currently analyzing funding, and they expect the new plant to start operations in six months.

Dos Pinos Invests $33 Million in Costa Rica

The dairy cooperative presented an expansion plan started in 2009 with an investment of $14 million and $19 million for 2010.

In 2009, the company built a facility for drying powdered milk, a 2.000 square meter distribution center and a sewage treatment plant.

In 2010, "the company will invest $12 million in constructing and remodeling veterinarian warehouses and branches around the country.

Costa Rica's Dos Pinos aims to expand in Guatemala

Costa Rica's top maker of dairy products, the Dos Pinos Cooperative, aims to expand its presence in Guatemala.

Dos Pinos already has US$12.5 million of investment in Guatemala, where it sells 80,000 liters of milk a day, but it aims to boost its presence by reaching accords with local companies, said Dos Pinos manager Jorge Pattoni.

New international milk processing company formed

July 2008

The dairy cooperatives Dos Pinos de Costa Rica and COOLECHE of Panama have joined forces to create COOPROLAP, which will sell the product in Panama.

The cooperatives, which expect to have half of the market for milk in Panama, will sell milk under their separate brand names, Dos Pinos and COOLECHE.
