Dam Construction Requires Financing in Honduras

The construction project for the Jicatuyo and Los Llanitos dams still needs $150 million in funding.

The project has already raised $100 million from the Brazilian National Bank, $200 million from Banco Centroamericano de Inversión, $20 million of the Brazillian company Odebrecht (who will carry out the works) and $100 million from Empresa Nacional de Energía Eléctrica, ENEE.

"With this scenario, the manager of the state power, Roberto Martínez Lozano, said funding is being sought for the remaining $150 million. He said that talks for the remainder of funding are well advanced.

Brazilian businessmen are holding meetings with government authorities in order to speed up the construction of hydro power plants Jicatuyo and Los Llanitos.

The two projects have a combined cost of $800 million, according to studies from ENEE, Honduras’ National Energy Enterprise.

The Odebrecht company will be in charge of constructing the Los Llanitos and the Jicatuyo hydroelectric dams in the Santa Barbara department.

Latribuna.hn reports on its website: "The work to be carried by the foreign company includes the design, construction, operation, maintenance, and transfer of the hydroelectric plants which will have an installed capacity of 271 megawatts, and an annual generation of 1,037 kilowatt-hours.

Congress passed a law permitting construction of hydroelectric plant Patuca I, II and III and Los Llanitos and Jicatuyo.

With the approval by the Special Regulatory Estate Acquisition Law it was declared of public interest and national need the construction and operation of the renewable energy projects mentioned.
