Delay in Introduction of Price per Unit of Measurement Regulations

Costa Rican merchants will have three months to include in their displays the price per unit of measurement on their products.

The entry into force of Decree # 36,749, which obligates sellers to indicate the price per unit of measurement (PUM in Spanish) has been extended until March 2012.

"Mayi Antillon, Minister of Economy, said the extension will allow more independent and chain supermarkets to conform to the regulation.

Apart from the extension, a new arrangement has also been established where suppliers with two or fewer cash registers may display the PUM on price lists visible to the consumer", reported Elfinancierocr.com.

Food products sold in Italy will have to include a label containing its origin in order to guarantee consumers maximum level of information regarding the food they consume.

FDA rejects 18 Honduras products

The United States Food and Drug Administration has rejected 18 products from Honduras because they were not properly labelled or they fail to comply with phytosanitary requirements.

Robert Armstrong, a U.S. embassy official in Honduras, said the products with entry problems represent a small proportion of the total trade with this country, which has been growing by 20 percent per year.

New U.S. Rules on Packaging

January 2011

Starting January 2012 nutrition labeling of single-ingredient foods such as ground meat and poultry will be required.

On December 29, 2010, the Food, Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has changed regulations on meat and poultry products. The changes will come into effect on the 1st of January 2012.
