Digicel enters cellular competition in Panama

Digicel Panama, announce its strategy that the company will use to start competing this month in Panama against Cable & Wireless and Telefonica Movil.

The operations of Digicel starts with an investment of more than $350 million, a new GSM/EDGE network and the opening of the more than 100 exclusive stores countrywide on Tuesday.

Raul Burgos, executive president of Digicel Panam, explained that the launch of the operation will have close to 85% national coverage and they expect to be at 87% in two weeks and at 90% in one month.

Digicel and Claro sign contracts for Panama wireless concessions

May 2008

Ireland-based Digicel and Claro, a unit of Mexico's América Móvil, signed contracts for the provision of wireless service in Panama, where their concessions oblige them to install four radio bases.

Manuel Troitiño, telecommunications director of the National Public Services Authority (ASEP), said both companies would have to apply to ASEP for frequencies or microwave links between the radio bases.

Panama: Digicel and Claro with 30% of Market in 2015

Pyramid Research predicts that Digicel will reach 21.3% of the mobile market and Claro 11.7% in 2015.

The research firm expects the market to continue growing hand in hand with increased demand for data services, but it is close to saturation point, with a penetration of 137% in late 2010.
