Inflation
According to the Consumer Price Index-CPI- at the level of the republic, developed by the National Statistics Institute INE, inflation showed a slight increase after two consecutive months of decline, since in November the CPI registered a value of 105.97, while in the previous month it was 105.74. According to this data, the monthly variation was 0.22% while the cumulative change up to 30 November was 5.97%, which shows the change in price compared to December last year. The rate of change (change in November 2011 compared to November 2010) stood at 6.05%, slightly above the inflation target set by the Monetary Board in 2011, of between 4% and 6%.
IMAE
The Monthly Economic Activity Index-IMAE-prepared by the Bank of Guatemala, is a useful indicator which tracks the pulse of economic activity throughout the year while the figures for the actual annual production (GDP) are being gathered and cyclical variations connected to it.
According to the latest estimate published in November by BANGUAT, for October 2011, the IMAE recorded a growth rate of 3.59% compared to the previous month, showing a negative trend for the fifth consecutive month since last April when there was a variation of 3.96%.During the first half of the year, the IMAE had shown an upward trend, but this was reversed in May being most pronounced in the fourth quarter.
