Companies from the Netherlands will visit Costa Rica to implement energy efficiency and renewable energy initiatives.

The need to ensure industry sustainability means searching for alternative sources of energy and its efficient use in order to stay competitive. With the aim of discussing solutions to this issue, Costa Rica's Chamber of Industry (CICR in Spanish) and MétaSus from Holland have organized this event with support from BUN-CA and Costa Rica's Clean Technologies Cluster.

The event will take place on 6 and 7 September in the Radisson Europa Hotel and Conference Center.

$9 Million in Renewable Energy

February 2010

Japan contributed $9 million to the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (ICE) for developing renewable energy generation projects.

ICE plans to install two solar plants for energy generation, one located in Guanacaste and another in San José.

Hidekasu Yamaguchi, Japanese Ambassador in Costa Rica, told newspaper La Prensa Libre that this non-refundable financial cooperation is part of the ‘Cool Heart Partnership’ which develops environmental projects in developing countries.

Eight hydro and wind power plants will begin operating in 2013.

325 MW will be added to the country’s power supply once the power plants being implemented in various parts of the country become functional.

The new energy will be managed by the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE), the National Power and Light Company (CNFL) and private companies, who have focused primarily on wind energy projects.

IDB approves green facility for Banco General of Panama

A $20 million non-sovereign guaranteed loan from the IDB will support Banco General, in growing a portfolio of green projects.

The facility will support investments involving energy efficiency, renewable energy, water and wastewater treatment, waste management and other carbon-mitigating projects.
