El Salvador Analyzes Brazilian Public Purchasing Model

The National Commission for Micro and Small Enterprises (CONAMYPE in Spanish) is evaluating the Brazilian model for inviting tenders from MSEs.

Mario Cerna, El Salvador's vice-minister for commerce, stated that this was one of the main objectives of his recent visit to Brazil. He indicated that, "we are interested in seeing how the system works and what kind of support Brazil given to MSEs, a key factor in the economic growth the country has seen in recent years and its stability through the financial crisis".

CONAMYPE and its Brazilian counter part also agreed to promote cooperation programs between the two countries.

El Salvador: MSEs to Be Included in Public Procurement

Proposed reforms to the country's Acquisitions and Contracts law, combined with a $1.4 million investment, would enable MSEs to bid for government contracts.

If the bill is approved by congress, the government procurement, acquisitions and contracts law (known as Lacap in Spanish) MSEs would obtain 12% of state purchases.

The proposed bill includes technical requirements and production quality standards for Small and Medium Enterprises.

Mario Cerna, Commerce and Industry vice ministry, explained that the bill is currently in its final draft.

Walmart looking for Salvadoran SMEs

The multinational chain held a business conference as part of its program “A Hand to Grow”.

SMEs interested in becoming providers for the retailer have until April 15 to apply. Those who meet the requirements may participate in the round of negotiations scheduled for May 18.
