El Salvador: Gas Stations Will Not Accept Credit Cards

300 service stations will gradually phase out the acceptance of credit or debit cards as payment

Tuesday, May 31, 2011

The decision taken by the Employers and Distributors Association of Petroleum Adepetro, and the Salvadoran Association of Distributors of Petroleum Products is in response to reduced profit margins resulting from the application of the new formula for establishing the sales price .

Cards will be accepted only in full-service stations and convenience stores.

When accepting credit cards the gas station is charged a 1.5% fee by the financial institution.

"The managers of Asdpp had proposed that the 1.5% fee be passed on to consumers, as it is in other businesses affiliated to financial institution, however the gas stations have agreed to start with this measure and then analyze what other measures could be taken depending on responses from both oil companies and the government.
