El Salvador: Minimum Wage Increase of 8% in Effect

With the approval by the Executive, an 8% increase in the minimum wage will come into force on May 16.

The agreement reached by employers, unions and government representatives, on 28 April, is waiting for ratification by the president in order to be implemented.

The National Minimum Wage Council is a body under the Ministry of Labour, and is composed of seven members, two of which represent the employment sector, two the workforce and three represent the government sector.

Companies, workers and the government are discussing a new salary increase for the private sector; the initial proposal is for a 10% increase starting January 2009.

Sources close tot he Minimum Salary Superior Council who asked to remain anonimous indicated that the debate is already focused on those figures and terms, but that they are waiting for the Government representatives, and private workers unions to give the last word after internal consultations.

Minimum Wage Increase Approved in Honduras

January 2012

Increases in the minimum wage effective for the next two years range from 5 to 7%.

According to the agreement the percentage increases vary depending on the number of workers who work in companies. Where there are 1 to 50 the increase is 5.6%, from 51 to 150 it is 6.24% and for more than151 employees the percentage is 7.25%.
