Electrical Interconnection Panama - Colombia

Both countries have pledged to contribute $210 million each for the completion of the project that will allow the sale of surplus electricity from Colombia to Central America.

Carlos Rodado Noriega, Colambian Minister of Mines and Energy, said at a news conference that an agreement has been signed with the Panamanian Minister of Finance, Alberto Vallarino, ISA from Colombia and the company Etesa from Panama.

Colombia will contribute 50% of the capital required by ISA for the project and the remainder will be provided by Panama through Etesa.

According to an article in El Meridiano de Córdoba, the Columbian Minister of Mines and Energy said that "The Panamanian government is committed to putting up $90 million as equity and $120 million as debt. This finalises the financing scheme and making this a true commitment."

The electrical interconnection project between the countries will begin with environmental impact studies.

The first step of the project, which is expected to be completed in 2014, will be to find a company to conduct a study of the environmental and social impact on both nations.
