Energy Tender Receives 1,555 MW in Bids

Guatemala distributors asked for 800 MW, but supply has exceeded expectations, with 873MW from non-renewable sources, and 682 MW from renewables.

Wednesday, February 1, 2012

Bids presented by 33 power generators together amount to almost double the 800 MW of power originally requested in Guatemala‘s recent tender. Overall, the proposals from the bidders totaled 1,554.9 MW, reported Siglo21.com.gt.

The process aims to ensure the power supply for the 2.3 million users and also change the country’s dependence on oil. The expectations of the Empresa Electrica de Guatemala (EEGSA) and Eléctricas de Oriente y Occidente (Deorsa y Deocsa), the main distributors in the country, have been exceeded.

"Plants generating from renewable sources submitted proposals for 681.9 MW while those using non-renewable sources proposed 873.0 MW", reported Siglo 21 on its website.

"The fact that the offers received are almost double the amount of megawatts that they want to contract out shows that there will be healthy competition", said the president of the National Energy Commission (CNEE), Carlos Colom.
