The National Secretariat of Energy had hired the company to OTS, with funding from the Corporation Andina de Fomento (CAF), to rearrange, classify and analyze the existing information on oil exploration.
The work involved the development of a database with information on the country's oil collected over the last 50 years, including discoveries, geology, and sites with the most potential, among other things. To date, 10 geological basins where there are likely to be oil reserves have been identified, some in the sea. These 10 basins are located in Darien, Gulf of San Miguel, Gulf of Panama, Bocas del Toro and Bayano.
Juan Manuel Urriola, the head of the Panamanian National Secretariat of Energy, said that "completion of the exploratory analysis found that in Bocas del Toro, in the area of Azuero, in the Gulf sector in the province of Darien, and the Caribbean coast of Panama there are deposits of oil."
The official reported that "it has been recommended that a tender be made this year in blocks for those areas."
