FTA between EFTA and Central America

The European Free Trade Association (EFTA), comprising of Switzerland, Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein, will negotiate a free trade agreement with Costa Rica, Honduras and Panama.

The announcement was made by the Swiss Minister of Economics, who said that EFTA member states agreed on the need to deepen relations with Central American states.

"The opening of free trade negotiations was set for November 14, 2011 in Geneva, during EFTA’s ministerial conference", indicated the Association.

A press release from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry (MICI) states:

The chief secretary of the MICI, Roberto Henriquez, explained that the first phase of negotiations involves the parties signing a Joint Declaration for Cooperation.

The country began a negotiation process with the European Fair Trade Association (EFTA).

This was announced by Panama's Ministry of Commerce and Industries, through a press release.

"EFTA's Council of Ministries, in a communiqué dated December 17th, announced its decision of offering a joint statement regarding its cooperation with Panama", reported Prensa.com.

Chile launches free trade agreement with Honduras

July 2008

A free trade agreement between Chile and Honduras went into effect July 19, Chile reported.

In 1999, Chile signed an FTA with five Central American countries before going on to sign specific protocols with Costa Rica, El Salvador and now Honduras.
The Chilean foreign ministry's head of commercial affairs, Carlos Furche, said: "The doors have been opened to 94 percent of our exports to Honduras that will now enter free of tariffs."
