The Panama Canal expansion is just one example that stands out of the many investment projects in energy and infrastructure, both public and private, going on in Central America, in contrast to the sluggishness in Europe, according to participants in the industry forum held in Panama.

The expansion of the Canal "changes the entire global shipping business," tripling capacity of ships making the crossing between the Pacific and Atlantic, said its administrator, Alberto Alemán Zubieta in the First Central American Forum on Financing Energy Projects and Infrastructure.

The meeting, organized by Project Finance magazine, was attended by nearly two hundred financial consultants and managers from leading companies in construction, to analyze the momentum that the works on highways, ports and power plants, among other things, have produced in the region.

6 million containers now pass through the Canal every year, aboard more than 14,000 ships that can carry 4400 containers each. After the expansion, they will be able to carry up to 14,500 containers, which is expected to produce "very significant cost savings", said Alemán Zubieta.
