Flights to Bocas del Toro to Increase

Copa Airlines passengers will have the option to connect to the island as a new destination from June.

From June 2012, Isla Colon, in the province of Bocas del Toro, Panama, will be part of the tourist destinations to which passengers can reach using the Panamanian airline Copa Airlines. The company has reached an agreement with the domestic airline Air Panama, which is responsible for transferring passengers from Tocumen International Airport to Isla Colon.

The domestic terminal has been functional since mid-2011, and $600,000 has been invested in the work, said Juan Carlos Pino, manager of Tocumen SA. The structure, formerly used as a warehouse, has the capacity to handle 200 people at the same time.

Statistics from the Civil Aviation Authority show that annually an average of 66,496 people use the airport in Isla Colon, of which 70% are tourists.

Continental will resume three-a-week flights to Tegucigalpa from Houston, Texas, starting next Monday. It said that starting August 1 it will begin a daily flight service to Honduras.

Spanair is negotiating with Panama to establish frequencies with Tocumen International Airport for their passengers to connect from there to other countries in the isthmus.

After Air Europa abandoned its intentions to fly from Spain to Panama, the only airline with that connection is Iberia.

Non-Stop Flights Linking Tocumen with Bocas del Toro

The Panamanian Tourism Authority (ATP) is negotiating direct flights to Bocas del Toro and David with airlines operating at Tocumen airport.

“The idea is to enable charter flights (which operate without pre-established schedules) from any city or country to land at Tocument International Airport and immediately board another plane to the airports of David and Bocas del Toro”, explained ATP advisor Ernesto Orillac.
