The purchase of Shell’s operations by Unopetrol, and Esso’s by Puma Energy, has spurred competition and is transforming the fuel sales market, with the opening of new retail outlets and additional service offers, such as car washing.

Increased safety at gas stations is another advantage used to attract drivers, who as consumers are benefiting from this competition.

Fausto Velasquez, Unopetrol marketing manager, notes that "the oil market in Guatemala is characterized by being highly competitive and free, which has allowed the entry of more brands and consumers have benefited from the implementation of new services."
