The presidents of El Salvador, Mauricio Funes, and Panama, Ricardo Martinelly, have 86% popularity.

According to the regional survey by Cid-Gallup, which interviewed 1.200 people, Oscar Arias from Costa Rica is in the third place, with a 70% popularity.

He is followed by Alvaro Colom, from Guatemala, with 55%; Leonel Fernández, from Dominican Republic with 47%; deposed Honduran president Manuel Zelaya with 46% and Daniel Ortega, Nicaraguan president, with 42%.

From El Financiero's web site: "It is worth noting that the study is not an evaluation of their job as presidents, but rather what citizens think of them as persons".

Funes and Lobo the Best Rated

CID/Gallup published their presidential approval survey for March 2010, which includes the presidents of Central America and the Dominican Republic.

Mauricio Funes, president of El Salvador, is still enjoys the highest approval.

He is followed by Porfirio ‘Pepe’ Lobo, who recently become the president of Honduras.

Mauricio Funes has an approval rating of 76%; he is followed by Ricardo Martinelli (66%), Laura Chinchilla (64%), Porfirio Lobo (60%), Alvaro Colom (50%) and Daniel Ortega (38%).

CID-Gallup unveiled its Central American public opinion poll for July 2010. It remarks that Funes remains the president with the highest approval ratings, and that Honduran president Lobo slipped from the third to the fourth spot, mainly because he is disliked by opposition and unregistered voters.

FMLN's Candidate Holds Small Lead in El Salvador's Election

According to a poll by CID-Gallup, El Salvador's presidential election could be very close. 39% of respondents would vote for Mauricio Funes while 35% would back Rodrigo Ávila.

The article published by Angus Reid Global Monitor on its website states: "In September 2007, Funes became the FMLN’s presidential nominee. In March 2008, Ávila, a former National Police chief, won ARENA’s three-candidate internal nationwide primary."

Insecurity and high living costs are the main concerns of Central Americans, said Esteban Alvarez, the new general manager of CID Gallup in Costa Rica.

Alvarez said the main challenge he faces is to increase the capacity that has made CID Gallup Latinoamérica a full-service agency for regional coverage.
