Guatemala: 3,000 Job Openings in Textiles

Guatemalan textile companies are preparing for a jump in orders during the high season at the end of the year from the United States.

On July 1st, the Guatemalan textile industry began the high season for production to fulfill orders of garments from the United States for the end of the year. The textile factories, which have been heavily affected by the economic crisis, forecast the contracting of 3,000 people for the season.

According to Prensalibre.com, Ligia Barrios, Director of Marketing and Promotion for the Garment and Textile Commission (VESTEX, acronym in Spanish) from the Guatemalan Exporters Association (AGEXPORT, acronym in Spanish), “there are currently 65,000 people who work directly in the production of garments and textiles, and foresee contracting more in order to meet the demand.”

Guatemala: Apparel Exports Up 27% in April

In April, Guatemala exported $82 million more textile goods than in the same period of 2009.

78.1% of them went to the United States, 17% to Central America and the rest to other countries such as Mexico and Canada.

Data from Vestex, the Textile and Apparel Commision, shows that apparel exports have been recovering sustainably since November 2009, after several years of negative growth.

Guatemala: Textile Exports Recover

After a big drop in 2009, sales abroad have seen a 17.6% increase in the first half of 2010.

According to information from Vestex, the Guatemalan association of textile and apparel manufacturers, in the first six months of this year the sector's exports totaled $705.2 million, 17.6% higher than the $599.6 million exported in the same period of 2009.

One hundred and fifteen textile plants in Guatemala are negotiating to buy electricity directly from power generators.

Buying electricity in direct form for textile companies will allow a significant savings in production costs, thus increasing sector competitiveness with the rest of the world.
