Guatemala: Service Sector Grows by 20%

The service sector closed 2011 with $397.3 million, 20% more than in 2010, according to the Guatemalan Association of Exporters.

The Contact Center industry accounted for 49% of the growth, equivalent to $194.4 million.

The Commission on Contact Centers & BPO’s at Agexport, has estimated growth for next year of nearly 20%.

"This sector has been one of the most dynamic in the service sector and its huge impact on mass employment generation makes up nearly 50% of the total export value. This confirms that promoting this industry gives a significant enhancement to the contribution given to Guatemalan people in terms of employment and boosts the economy", said the Chairman of the Commission on Contact Centers & BPO’s, Germain Lopez

He said that businesses have maintained confidence in the expansion of services in the country, however there are still major challenges to be faced together within the industry", reported Prensalibre.com

Ninoshka Linde, marketing director for 24 / 7 Customer, stated to Elperiodico.com.gt: "Next [year] we expect to continue growing, but that depends heavily on the bilingual talent available. We plan to reach 3 thousand people, or an increase of 1,200 new jobs."

Representatives from companies providing products and technology services in the region are meeting in Guatemala.

Sectors being promoted in the event include sustainable tourism, health and wellbeing tourism, laboratories, contact centers, digital content development, and software.

The sector closed 2010 with a 16.400 working payroll, 23% higher than 2009.

According to the Committee on Contact Center of the Guatemalan Association of Exporters, 75 companies currently operate in the country.
