Guatemala Strengthens Trade Ties with Europe

The old continent has become an important destination for Guatemalan exports.

Tuesday, July 26, 2011

The fairs organized by European countries and trade missions by Guatemalan businessmen, together with the government, are two of the reasons for the increase in exports to countries like Germany, Italy and Belgium, among others.

In addition, the economic crisis affecting the United States, historically the main destination for sales abroad, has forced them to look for new markets for Guatemalan products.

Exports have risen 40% this year compared to 2010, up from $247 million to $345 million. Of the total, 27% is sold to Germany, 25% to Italy and the rest to Belgium, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands.

An article in s21.com.gt states: "Germany is one of the main markets for Guatemalans, especially because they are coffee buyers. According to the president of the National Coffee Association (Anacafe) Ricardo Villanueva, exports to the German market have increased over the past three years. The employer indicated that about $183 million worth of this product has been sold and is followed by products like alcoholic beverages which totaled $44.6 million.

The Minister of Economy, Luis Velasquez, said that several meetings to strengthen trade ties with the Europeans have been held for some time, and that the goal is to sign a partnership agreement with Central America.

Velasquez noted that this project is in the process of verification and translation of texts. According to the EU Commerce Commission confirmed the texts have already been agreed upon and the agreement will start with the commercial pillar. Velasquez predicts that this agreement will further enhance trade relations. "
