Guatemala Waives Tariffs For Importing Buses

It applies to public transportation buses, and in those departments where the prepaid system will be implemented.

Decree 21-2010, approved by Congress, establishes that transportation companies will be exempt from paying VAT and any other tariffs when importing new buses and micro buses.

Congressmen Roberto Villate regretted that not all businessmen were included in the initiative. “It should apply to everyone, but the decree only specifies associations”, said Villate.

Guatemala: Buses Can Now Be Imported Tariff-Free

For the next three years buses can be imported without paying tariffs, as a new bill came into force on Monday.

Called “Bill for Strengthening and Improving Public Transportation”, it allows mass transit association to import buses to replaces existing ones without paying imports tariffs and value-added taxes.

Bus fares in Guatemala City to be frozen for five months

May 2008

Bus companies and authorities in Guatemala City agreed on a five-month freeze in bus fares, to the relief of the traveling public.

Buses will continue to charge a one quetzal (14 US cents) fare, Deputy Transport Minister Lucrecia Ruiz said after a meeting with bus company leaders, who called of their threat of a strike beginning May 30.

Costa Rica Will Auction Bus Routes

A bill passed by Congress in first debate introduces mandatory auctions when granting permits for public bus routes.

If it comes into effect, companies who already own licenses for bus routes will be able to participate in abbreviated processes to renew them.

Nacion.com reported comments by opposition congressmen Marvin Rojas, who stated that “this is in response to the inoperativeness of the Public Transportation Council, which has failed to do the tasks it was created for”.
