Guatemala and the Mayan Calendar’s Change of an Era

With 52 weeks and one day before December 21, 2012, when some believe that the Mayans predicted the end of an era, the country has begun a series of activities to attract visitors.

Wednesday, December 21, 2011

The activities planned include archaeological conventions, concerts, exhibitions and gastronomic events, among other things.

The Chamber of Tourism of Guatemala (Camtur) expects to receive about 2 million 25 thousand visitors in 2012, up 8% from 2011.

The Guatemalan Institute of Tourism (Inguat) has been commissioned to tour the world promoting Guatemala as an essential destination for next year, but Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador are also preparing similar activities, so the competition to attract tourists will increase.

"Maru Acevedo, Camtur director, notes that Guatemala is the cradle of the Mayan culture, and that it is already working with Central American tour operators on package tours, that include trips in the four countries that hosted this civilization", reported Elperiodico.com.gt.
