Guatemala to Issue 200 Quetzal Bills

The Monetary Board approved the emission of Q200 Bills (24.88 dollars at today's exchange rate) which would go into circulation later this year.

Julio Roberto Suarez, vice president of the Bank of Guatemala (Banguat), informed PrensaLibre.com: "The Banguat will get the price quotes and it will conduct the international bidding with the currency manufacturers that supply the region in June."

Guatemala: Canadian Company to Produce Q5 Notes

Canadian Bank Note was awarded the bid for the manufacture of new Q5 polymer notes.

The company was selected from a total of ten which participated.

Jorge Caceres, director of the Monetary Emission Department at Banguat told Prensalibre.com, "The delivery of bills will take place during the first half of next year and is expected to go into circulation in late 2011".

Rise in Dollar Attributed to Speculation in Guatemala

The monetary authority of Guatemala, Banguat, continued to intervene in the market by selling dollars to address a rise that could be due to speculation.

Authorities and analysts argued about the causes for the appreciation of the US currency for which there are apparently no clear causes.

Guatemala: Banguat Authorized to Sell More Dollars

Banguat is now authorized to sell up to $32 million a day; previously, it could offer only 24.

The measure, approved by the Monetary Board (Junta Monetaria), intends to give Banguat, the Central Bank of Guatemala, greater flexibility to control the depreciation of the Quetzal versus the Dollar.

Guatemala To Hire Banknote Printing

November 2010

The bidding process will contract printing services for 250 million polymer banknotes with a 5 quintales denomination.

Edgar Barquin, president of Bank of Guatemala, said the new bills would circulate in the second half of 2011.

The executive told Prensa Libre that "the purpose of printing on this material is to have more durability and security."
