Coffee, farmed shrimp, bananas and sugar are the leading products in Honduran exports to the European Union, accounting for 35% of the total in the first half of the year.
The increase in reported sales to Europe has been significant, going from $546 million in 2008 to $818 million in the first six months of the year alone.
It is hoped that with the Association Agreement signed with the Central European Union, which comes into effect next year, exports will grow even more.
According to an article in Elheraldo.hn: "Germany is listed as the top destination for Honduran exports to the EU, with $309.3 million worth in the first half of 2011.
It is followed by Belgium ($208 million), Italy ($58.5 million), France ($52.4 million), The United Kingdom ($40.8 million), Netherlands ($35.7 million), Sweden ($27.2 million), Spain ($21.6 million), Russia ($20.6 million) and others ($44.4million). "
