Honduras: $ 75 Million for Housing and Energy

Government will use resources of PDVSA for the construction of social housing and hydro electrical plants.

The National Electricity Company will receive $ 60 million of available resources to finance the hydro electrical projects Llanitos, Jicatuyo, Patuca and the Aguán.

On funding for housing, the regional vice president of the Honduran Chamber of Construction Industry (Chico), Juan Carlos Sikaffi, said that "these resources would come to battle the financial crisis which exists in the rural sector and that currently has no support from the traditional financial system, mainly because of the risk existing in this type of investment."

Congress passed a law permitting construction of hydroelectric plant Patuca I, II and III and Los Llanitos and Jicatuyo.

With the approval by the Special Regulatory Estate Acquisition Law it was declared of public interest and national need the construction and operation of the renewable energy projects mentioned.

Brazilian businessmen are holding meetings with government authorities in order to speed up the construction of hydro power plants Jicatuyo and Los Llanitos.

The two projects have a combined cost of $800 million, according to studies from ENEE, Honduras’ National Energy Enterprise.

The construction project for the Jicatuyo and Los Llanitos dams still needs $150 million in funding.

The project has already raised $100 million from the Brazilian National Bank, $200 million from Banco Centroamericano de Inversión, $20 million of the Brazillian company Odebrecht (who will carry out the works) and $100 million from Empresa Nacional de Energía Eléctrica, ENEE.

Boost to Popular Housing Construction

January 2012

A joint housing project between a bank and the Chamber of Construction will be carried out in Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

The president of the National Agricultural Development Bank (Banadesa), Johnny Handal, and vice president of the Honduran Chamber of Construction Industry (Chico), Oscar Calona signed off on a program for building popular housing.
