IDB earmarks US$3.7 billion in loans for private sector

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) aims issue US$3.7 billion in loans to the private sector next year, said Steven J. Puig, the bank's vice president for private-sector lending.

Puig added that the IDB also hopes to increase its presence in Central America and the Caribbean. Two new officials are being hired in El Salvador to handle lending to major companies and small businesses respectively.
Staff would also be added in other Central American countries as the IDB attempts to diversify from the large nations that have traditionally been the focus of its activities, Puig added.

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) will loan $27 million to a program fostering rural business.

The funds are earmarked for the departments of Olancho, El Paraíso, Colón and Gracias a Dios, and intended to fund projects by small producers. It is part of the National Program for Sustainable Rural Development (Pronaders).

$400 million for widening of Panama Canal

The Inter-American Development Bank approved a loan today for the widening of the Panama Canal, the biggest infrastructure project underway in Latin America.

"The IDB has been a strong ally of Panama for almost 50 years," said the president of the bank, Luis Alberto Moreno, in a release.
