Increased Cooperation between Russia and Nicaragua

The countries have agreed to strengthen cooperation in the use of satellites, and made some business deals. There is also possible interest on the part of the Russians in a railroad worth $52 million.

The Nicaraguan Minister of Development, Industry and Commerce, Orlando Solorzano, and the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov, signed an agreement for economic cooperation and scientific and technical information. "The scope of this is the joint use of outer space for the use of satellite mobile communication and global positioning," said the online edition of La Prensa.

The Nicaraguan private sector also traveled to Russia and obtained some contracts. Sergio Rios, president of the mining company Hemco reported that a Russian supplier has agreed to supply 1,000 tons of cyanide a year to be used for gold processing.

The Russian Transport Ministry expressed interest in investing in a rail line between Managua and Granada, in the Pacific, which would cost about $52 million.

Nicaragua Will Not Negotiate FTA with Venezuela

The trade minister has denied the possibility of the country signing a free trade agreement (FTA) with Venezuela.

Orlando Solórzano, indicated that instead of a FTA, which is limited to trade rules, the countries are developing a plan to integrate members of the Alternative Bolivarian Alliance for the Americas (ALBA), which he called the People's Trade Agreement.

Nicaraguan Government Removes Tariffs on Chicken

In order to avoid further increases to the consumer, the government has allowed the import of 1,150 tons of duty free chicken.

The Nicaraguan Minister of Development, Industry and Commerce (Mific in Spanish), Orlando Solórzano, said the move is in response to an increase in the price per kilo from $2.15 to $ 2.44, made unilaterally by the distributors, without the endorsement of the authorities, and without respecting an agreement, which was "that the price of chicken would be kept frozen until December."
