India Seeks FTA with Panama

The Asian giant has suggested signing a free trade agreement, one to avoid double taxation, and a treaty to exchange financial information and technology exchanges.

India seeks to strengthen trade relations with Panama, "tripling" the flow of trade between the two countries, said Yogeshwar Varma, India's ambassador in Panama, according to an article in Prensa.com.

"India is growing very fast, we are number seven in the world with a $2 trillion economy and we are focusing our efforts on highlighting the competitiveness of our country in the world economic development," said Varma, in a written report quoted by the newspaper on its website.

A delegation from the Indian government has praised the Panamanian economy and expressed an interest in establishing a dialogue in order to strengthen trade ties between both countries.

India's ambassador in Panama indicated that they aim to triple the current trade figures between the two countries within four years.

India wants to promote investment in various sectors of Panama’s economy, seeing this country as a platform for expansion into Latin America for their companies and products.

Panama and Canada continue to explore possible FTA

In 2007 Canada was the tenth most frequent user of the Panama Canal and that same year bilateral trade reached 115 million dollars.

"This agreement is an important step in creating a strong economic partnership between our two countries," said the Minister of Trade of Canada, Michael Fortier, during a luncheon with members of the Canadian business community at the Miraflores visitors' center.

Nicaragua Seeks FTA with China

The country awaits response from the Chinese Government to the proposal of signing a Free Trade Agreement.

Economic affairs adviser to the president, Bayardo Arce, speaking to media said they hope by the end of the year to receive the response.

In an article, El Nuevo Diario reports, “I think (the proposal for a trade agreement) we received a positive feedbak and we hope to get an answer this year," said Arce, who recently visited China, a country which Nicaragua has no diplomatic ties with because it has them with Taiwan."
