International Coffee Lab for Panama

The country's first certified coffee laboratory will be built in the province of Chiriquí.

Construction could began early 2010, detailed Herman Gneagi, from the Program for Technological Development and Modernization of Coffee Growing.

"This lab will be certified by the International Specialty Coffee Association, and will benefit not only Panama, but all of Latin America" reported Prensa.com.

New Coffee Tasting Laboratory in Nicaragua

Located in the province of Jinotega, it is the second one in Central America granted SCAA certification.

The center is the eight in the world awarded SCAA certification on behalf of the Association of Specialty Coffees of America, explained Carlos Figuero, from Aecid, the Spanish International Cooperation Agency for Development.

New Laboratory to Improve Coffee Production

The lab is the largest and most modern in Central America for in vitro propagation of coffee by somatic embryogenesis.

It is located in Santa Barbara, Honduras and required an investment of $1 million. It was constructed with fund contributions from the Millennium Account-Honduras and the Honduran Coffee Institute.

XIII Edition of Fine Coffee Tasting in Panama

Thirty samples of the best coffee from Chiriqui will participate in the "Best of Panama 2009" fine coffee tasting, from May 7 to 9.

The event was organized by the Specialty Coffee Association of Panama, with the participation of 15 international tasters from the United States, Norway, Holland and Costa Rica.

Opportunities Lost By Nicaraguan Coffee

Nicaragua could double its production of specialty coffee by taking advantage of its favorable geographic situation.

Only 17% of Nicaragua’s production corresponds to quality coffee, but the country could increase that to 30%.

Danilo Saavedra, operations manager at Funica, a foundation for agricultural technology, stated that “the problem lies after the harvest, where coffee loses quality because of bad procedures”.
