Investment in Infrastructure and Renewable Energy Announced

Terra Group has announced the investment of $170 million in renewable energy projects and airport infrastructure for 2012 in Honduras.

Reflecting confidence in the economic development of Honduras, the company has announced its interest in investing in various projects next year, which will require an investment of approximately $170 million.

In addition to the wind project in the south and other projects for hydropower generation, authorities from Terra Group also released a schedule of investments in four international airports and the air terminal in Palmerola.

An article in Elheraldo.hn states: "in the next three years $150 million will be invested in the airports. The new international airport to be built in Palmerola, Comayagua, will be capable of landing the largest aircraft in the world, said Fredy Nasser, President of Terra Group. "

Honduras to Host Latin American Biomass Project

The country has been confirmed as the site for the pilot project to test the use of biomass for generating electricity in the region.

The main objective of the US government backed initiative is to reduce the consumption of oil used for generating electricity.

The announcement was made by the US ambassador in Honduras, Hugo Llorens, at a meeting held between representatives of the Institute of the Americas and the renewable energy sector.

Nicaragua’s Hydroelectric Potential

Nicaragua generates just 98 MW of hydroelectric energy, while having potential for an estimated 3.280MW.

Recently, the Ministry of Energy and Mines (MEM) informed they are studying 18 projects, while 6 are under construction.

Tumarín hydro power plant, located in Matagalpa, could become one of Nicaragua’s largest projects in the past 50 years. It would be capable of outputting 250MW, or one third of the country’s demand.

Central America Paying More for the Same Stuff?

In Nicaragua the hydroelectric station ‘Tumarín’ will be built at a cost of $4.3 million per MW. In Costa Rica only adding a generator to an existing plant cost $2.3 million per MW.


The hydroelectric plant ‘Sopladora’ which will be built in Ecuador will produce 487 MW with an investment of $672 million, or $1.3 million per MW.
