Lack of Specialist Doctors in Panama

The Social Security Department already has a shortfall of 200 specialists and in the next 4 years more than 400 currently serving doctors will retire.

At the moment there are 1443 medical specialists working in the Social Security Department (CSS), 405 are over 58 years old, which means that they will retire in four years, according to information from the Directorate of National Health Services and Benefits at the CSS.

"Of this group, medical specialists who are closest to retirement include speech therapists, with 66.7% (two out of three physicians are over 58 years old), endocrinologists, with 50% (5 out of 10 physicians are over 58 years old), a thoracic surgeon, with 50% (one out of two doctors is over 58 years old) and plastic and reconstructive surgeons with a 44.4% (8 of 18 physicians are over 58 years old) ", reported Prensa.com.

The report also reveals that other specialist areas are affected with 18 out of 42 ear, nose and throat specialists, 4 out of 11 rheumatologists, and several cardiologists in the same situation .
