Medical Tourism Congress in Costa Rica

The third Medical Travel Conference will be held from 23 to 25 April, 2012.

The event is organized by the International Council for the Promotion of Medicine in Costa Rica (PROMED) and the Costa Rican tourist board.

Massimo Manzi, PROMED’s chief executive, said they expect the participation of more than 500 people, and that the event will take place at the Inter-Continental Hotel in San Jose.

Costa Rica Declares Medical Tourism of National Interest

About 100,000 tourists visit the country annually for medical purposes, paying between $4,000 and $6,000 per procedure.

The measure enacted by the executive branch will mean that the Tourism and Foreign Trade Ministries will work on bringing more investment and patients to the country, and that the Health Ministry will promote international accreditation of the medical facilities and ensure service quality.

Medical tourism destinations have emerged all over the globe, from Thailand to South Africa, and even European countries such as Hungary. The industry anticipates a great deal of growth in the coming years, from a 2004 estimate of $40 billion to $100 billion by 2012, according to statistics produced by McKinsey & Company and the Confederation of India.

Experts believe that medical tourism will have a positive impact on the economies of destination countries and benefit skilled and unskilled trades alike. The medical tourism phenomenon may also bode well for foreign investors who hold an interest in those countries.

On October 6th and 7th, Costa Rican Medical Care will hold a medical tourism conference in San José, Costa Rica.

Costa Rican Medical Care, a division of the HSA Clearing Corp., works with three private hospitals in Costa Rica in offering their services to North American clients.
